I took them on a field near to my home one day and since that moment I was hooked on the game. In 1994 I joined Haigh Hall Golf Club. It is here that I spent many years working on my game and practicing every spare moment. During my school holidays I would arrive at the golf club at 10am and I would practice hard until dark, working on all areas of my golf game. less

The first of the 2 par 4's is one of the toughest holes on the course. From the tee the fairway slopes down into the valley through which Ackhurst Brook runs. Players must play over the brook and up onto the two tiered Mckenzie styled green located on the plateau above. The longest of hitters have an opportunity to drive for the green, however it is extremely risky and a lay-up shot is the sensible choice. less

Gathurst Golf club is located very close to Jct 27 of the M6 motorway, an 18 hole parkland course with a variation of hole designs to challenge golfers of all abilities. Work is continuous around the course, the new open ditch on the 11th hole was added recently, the 5th tee has been re-laid and raised. Golfers will have an altered view, as they survey the pond to the left and out of bounds to the right, where the white stakes of the practice ground loom for the over cautious. less

Hindley Park, the old hall and estate lands, were purchased for £1,300 in 1721 by Alexander Leigh, a powerful and prosperous man in the Borough of Wigan. He was a Barrister who was variously Town Solicitor, Clerk and Mayor. Whilst never residing in the hall he did exploit the coal reserves and even built the Douglas Navigation Canal to cut the cost of transporting his coal to Liverpool. He eventually sold the canal to the Leeds Liverpool Canal Company becoming the Lancashire section of it. less
