The Club originated in 1886 with a nine hole course set out on Whittington Heath a high piece of land adjacent to Whittington Barracks, two and half miles from the Cathedral City of Lichfield.Previous to this the heath has been used as a horse racing track, and there is still today visible reminders of this, particularly the "road" to the right of the 6th fairway and at the back of the 7th Green.
As any ex-CEGB employee will probably confirm, there was a time when nearly every Power Station had its own golf course, albeit in most cases, a pitch and putt or at best, par 3 course. Rugeley PowerStation was no exception. Shortly after the Power Station opened in 1961, the employees' Sports & Social Club was formed, and one of the first activities to be established was a Golf Society.

The Club is set in the heart of Sutton Coldfield on the northeastern outskirts of Birmingham. This central position makes access from the motorway system very simple.
The 18 hole course has an abundance of sand traps. Each and every green is closely guarded by bunkers requiring a precise second shot. The layout is little changed from Dr Mackenzie's original designbut a careful programme of tree planting over the last fifty years means that every fairway is tree lined calling for greater accuracy from the tee than most courses.
The club offers excellent amenities with 2 well stocked bars, a restaurant serving quality food, good locker and changing facilities, 2 snooker tables and a relaxing patio area with panoramic viewsover our lovely course, all overlaid with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Visitors are welcome and assured of good hospitality coupled with a fine test of golf. The permitted hours for the sale of intoxicating liquors, subject to any subsequent Acts of Parliament shall be 11:00 - 23:00.
