In the Auchterarder Guide of some 50 years ago it gives a population of 2,254 and also mentions that Auchterarder derives its name from the Gaelic 'Auchdar aird tir', signifying 'the summit of therising ground'. Standing on a ridge in Strathearn, it is one of the highest towns in Scotland. It also mentions sporting facilities, the nine- hole course being recognised as one of the finest inland courses in Central Scotland, laid out in 1913 by Ben Sayers. A modest payment made the visitor a member.

Founded in 1899, the club and course enjoy abackdrop more reminiscent of the Swiss Alps than Central Scotland. Indeed, this was confirmed when, on 20th June 1879 while passing by train, Queen Victoria described Tillicoultry as "lying in a wooded green valley at the foot of the [Ochil] hills, reminding me of Italy and Switzerland".
Situated below the slopes of the Ochil Hills, the lovely Perthshire village of Dunning is steeped in history, from the Iron Age fort at Dun Knock, through to the 1st Century Roman camp at Kincladieand a monument commemorating the last witch in Scotland, Maggie Wall, who was burnt in 1657. Add a 17th century St Serf's church and the famous 9th century Pictish Dupplin Cross and you will be playing golf at one of Scotland's ancient settlements.
