Hesketh is the oldest golf club in Southport, established in 1885. The course is pre-dominantly links in nature and Championship golf has been played at Hesketh from the early days. In addition tobeing a previous qualifying venue when The Open was played at nearby Royal Birkdale, Hesketh has hosted many other professional and amateur championships. Most recently, it hosted the Junior Open in 2008 and co-hosted the Amateur Championship with near-by Hillside in 2011.
Sherdley Park Golf Club is a private club, that plays its golf at Sherdley Park Municipal Golf Course in St Helens. The club exists to provide organised competitive golf throughout the year on one ofthe best courses in the North West. Members choose to play the main weekly competition on Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning. All members are eligible to enter all of the competitions, regardless of handicap.

Childwall ranks with the very best of courses in this area of very fine Golf Clubs. The course design was based on the recommendation of James Braid and has, over the years, undergone somealterations, mainly to increase the length. Childwall Golf Club is a very tough test of Golf and can match any course. The course is not undulating and is very pleasant to walk. The Clubhouse is extremely attractive, serves excellent food and has a friendly, hospitable atmosphere.

The general principle is that visitors shall conform to the best of golf standards both on and off the course. On the course golf shoes are to be worn; tailored shorts may be worn but only with kneelength socks. In the clubhouse smart casual wear is accepted in the Spike Bar and Lounge. Golf shoes and waterproof clothing are not to be worn in the clubhouse other than in the locker rooms and Spike Bar.

Southport Old Links Golf Club, despite not being the biggest or best-known golf course in Southport, is still one of the oldest, with the quality to match its famous neighbours. Golf was first playedhere in 1892, before many of the larger / more famous clubs had their first monthly medal or cut the fairways with their horse-drawn mowers for the first time. The present Club was formed in 1926 when a Limited Liability Company was floated to take over the assets of the former Club.
