The course was originally runand maintained by Durham Council until a takeover by the members in July 2011. This golf course stands on the site of the old West Pelton Colliery ( Handen Hold Pit ). The first shaft was sunk in 1860. Old mine plans show that the area had been worked for coal prior to 1777.
Birtley Golf Club is situated close to the A1 near to Chester Le Street in County Durham England. The Course is a nine hole layout with 18 tees described as a little gem on the hillside of Birtley byGolf Monthly. A Parkland course measuring 5729 yards par 67, with testing par threes and 6 par fours over 400 yards. Be prepared for a testing start as the first hole is a 238 yard par 3 followed by the second hole at 453 yards dog leg par 4.
Lovingly blended into the countryside surrounding Lumley Castle and meandering along the banks of the River Wear, the mature and mainly parkland course at Chester-le-Street overlooks the EmiratesDurham International Cricket Ground to the West, with fells and hills beyond. Mature woodland surrounds most of the Eastern boundaries.
